Terminology and Acronyms

Terminology and acronyms are continuously evolving. The 2SLGBTQI+ represents:

• Two-Spirit
• Lesbian
• Gay
• Bisexual
• Transgender
• Queer
• Intersex
• People who identify as part of sexual and gender diverse communities.

The “2S” recognizes Two-Spirit people as the first 2SLGBTQI+ community. The “I” for intersex considers sex characteristics beyond sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. The “+” is inclusive of people who identify as part of sexual and gender diverse communities who use other terms.

Resources:

Thunder Pride Association: A 2SLGBTIQ+ community that supports all people of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario to grow into an inclusive and diverse community.

Rainbow Collective of Thunder Bay: An inclusive, supportive and empowering home for Gender and Sexual Diversity (GSD) communities. These include those in the Two-Spirit and Intersex community, and those with various forms of attractions or other intersecting identities.

Pride Central + Gender Equity Centre (Lakehead University): Educates, lobbies, supports and refers for service to provide a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gendered, two- spirited, queer, intersex, and allies (LGBTTQIA) students. 2SLGBTQ+ Mentor (Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre): Provides resources, programming, and support (e.g. sharing circles, one-on-ones) to those who identify as Two-Spirit or LGBTQIA+ to build gender diverse communities. The Mentor is available to children, youth and adults. The Mentor can provide information for parents/guardians/relations/friends, and education and resources for non-indigenous/non-LGBTQIA+ individuals to help create a safer environment and community. We had the honors to be working in partnership with Niishaayek 2S Alliance, in developing a Series of Podcast’s on various ways to be supportive, teaching through stories, and sharing space.
